My little one, Leo, has officially entered his ‘dropping everything from the high chair’ phase, and honestly, it’s both fascinating and slightly maddening. He’ll pick up a toy, look me straight in the eye, and then slowly, deliberately, let it go to watch it fall to the floor. Then he looks at me like, ‘Well, are you going to get that, Dad?’
It’s not just food anymore, though that’s still a big part of it. It’s spoons, cups, little plastic animals, even his pacifier if he thinks he can get away with it. I know it’s a huge part of them learning about cause and effect, gravity, and how things work in the world. They’re basically little scientists, conducting experiments with every drop!
But man, my back is getting a workout. Sometimes I try to turn it into a game, like ‘up and down,’ or give him things that are tied to the high chair. Other times, I just have to let it go and pick it all up later when he’s done with his ‘research.’
What kinds of things are your babies obsessed with dropping right now? And more importantly, how do you manage the endless retrieve game without losing your mind (or your patience)? Any clever tips for dealing with this super common, yet surprisingly exhausting, developmental stage?
