Remember those picture-perfect moments of babies delicately trying their first purées? As a dad, I bought into that vision for a while. Then reality hit, and mealtimes with our little one became a glorious, food-covered chaos zone, complete with flying spoons and unexpected meal refusals.
We’re beyond the initial “first tastes” now, and our little guy (14 months) is firmly in the ‘exploring food with all five senses, including throwing it on the floor’ phase. It’s a daily balance of trying to get good nutrients in him while also trying to foster a positive relationship with food, all without losing my mind or needing a full floor scrub after every meal.
What’s really helped us is focusing less on how much he eats and more on the experience. We try to make it fun, involve him in choosing (within reason), and sometimes just accept that some food will end up elsewhere. Also, having a good routine and not forcing it helps a lot. And honestly, a good splash mat is a game-changer!
I know every family’s journey is different. For those of you navigating the wonderful, messy world of feeding your 0-18 month olds, what are your real-life experiences? What creative strategies or mindset shifts have helped you make mealtimes less stressful and more enjoyable for everyone involved?
