Is my newborn feeding enough? Decoding frequent feeds & sleepy babies

It’s common for new parents to worry about whether their newborn is getting enough to eat, especially in those first few weeks. Breastfed babies often feed 8-12 times in 24 hours, sometimes more! This can feel constant. Formula-fed babies usually have a more predictable schedule but can also have growth spurts. Key indicators of adequate intake aren’t just the clock, but wet and dirty diapers, and your baby’s overall demeanor (alert periods, gaining weight).

What are your best tips for managing frequent feeds with a sleepy newborn, and how did you know they were getting enough?

For my first, I tracked everything in an app – feeds, diapers, naps. It really helped me see the patterns and confirm she was indeed feeding enough and gaining weight. Cluster feeding around growth spurts was real, but knowing it was normal made it easier to embrace the couch time!

My lactation consultant told me to watch for active swallowing during feeds, not just sucking. And the ‘jellyfish arms’ – when they go limp and content after a good feed. That visual really stuck with me! For sleepy feeders, cool washcloths on their feet or tickling their chin sometimes helped rouse them a bit.
