We’ve officially entered the world of solids with our little one, who’s almost 7 months now, and what a ride it’s been! As a dad watching all this unfold, I honestly thought it would be more straightforward than it is. We prepped all the purees, read up on baby-led weaning, and then watched our kiddo mostly just play with the food for the first few days!
It’s amazing how much information there is out there, and sometimes it feels like information overload. For us, a big ‘aha!’ moment was realizing that the goal isn’t just about how much they eat in those early days, but about exposure and exploration. We started with single-ingredient purees like sweet potato and avocado, but also offered some soft finger foods. Our little one absolutely loves trying to pick up soft pieces of banana, even if most of it ends up smeared on her face and highchair. A good washable bib and a floor mat have become essential!
I’m curious to hear from other moms in this community: What was your personal ‘aha!’ moment when introducing solids? Was it a specific food that clicked, a technique you adopted, or just a mindset shift? What worked (or didn’t work) for you and your little one in those exciting early feeding days?
For me, the big ‘aha!’ was feeding solids after a partial milk feed. They were less hangry, so they actually focused on the food instead of just protesting. It made a huge difference in reducing mealtime stress.
Oh, I’m just seeing this thread pop up again, and it’s such a good one! The ‘information overload’ is so real, isn’t it? We definitely felt that too, and I completely agree with your ‘aha’ about exposure and exploration being the main goal, especially early on. It really shifted my perspective from “how much did she eat?” to “how much did she try or engage with?” That whole realization about the mess being part of the learning curve really saved my sanity!
For us, a big ‘aha!’ moment was actually realizing how much pressure I was putting on myself for her to ‘eat properly’ right away. My little one, now 14 months, was similar – lots of playing with food, smearing everywhere. I worried she wasn’t getting enough. Then, one day, I just relaxed and let her go at it. I offered a pre-loaded spoon of oatmeal, and she just snatched it and put it in her mouth! It was like she needed to be in control, even of the spoon. That moment really clicked for me – that giving her agency, even small bits, was key to her engaging. We also found that having a mix of textures on her tray at once really helped – some soft finger foods, some puree for dipping.
It also made me wonder, for those who started with mostly purees first, how did you transition to more lumpy or textured foods? Was there a specific texture that your little one just embraced, or was it a really gradual process of thickening things up?
That pressure we put on ourselves is so real! My ‘aha’ moment was remembering their main nutrition is still coming from milk in the early months. It shifted my focus from ‘how much’ to just letting them explore and have fun.
